In addition to addressing the student's specific needs in a subject, emphasis is placed on developing the background theory necessary for a fuller understanding of the topic. For math, this entails the teaching of proofs, logic, and detailed explanations of both how and why an answer is true. Solutions are developed by building on previous foundational results so that the pupil has an organized framework from which to draw knowledge. For foreign language, complex but useful grammar and word forms are introduced from the beginning, in contrast with other programs, in order for the pupil to communicate a variety of commonly used phrases and sentences as soon as possible.
